Google has expanded ads in AI Mode to India and nine other markets. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can participate automatically when eligible, but that does not mean every account is ready for longer, exploratory and context-matched journeys.
The operational change is larger than a new placement. Advertisers cannot create an AI Mode-only campaign, assign a separate budget or opt out of AI Mode independently. Performance is folded into existing Google Ads reporting. That makes the quality of targeting, conversion signals, landing pages, product data and downstream CRM evidence more important. It also reinforces a wider shift covered in our analysis of how marketers should measure Google AI Search journeys: the query is no longer the whole context.
What Google announced on 28 October 2026
Google’s official announcement says ads in AI Mode are expanding to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google also launched multiturn ads in the United States, allowing sponsored results to appear in follow-up questions when commercial relevance develops during the conversation.
Google reports that AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches. It also says click-through rates were similar between sponsored and organic product-list items in its cited US internal study. These are Google-reported findings from defined markets and periods—not universal forecasts for every advertiser, industry or Indian account.
- Eligible campaign types: Search, Shopping and Performance Max.
- Eligible formats: text and Shopping ads, with other formats still being tested.
- India availability: ads within AI Mode are available in English.
- Billing: standard auction, CPC or conversion-based bidding rules continue.
- Separation: buying ads does not influence Google’s organic AI responses.
For a paid-search account review that covers campaign structure, landing pages and conversion quality together, PRM Digital’s PPC team can audit the operating system behind the campaigns, not merely the visible ads.

The important distinction: query matching versus contextual matching
Google’s AI-powered Search ads documentation describes two matching paths.
Direct query matching
When the search clearly expresses commercial intent—such as “pool vacuum cleaners”—Google can match an ad directly to the query. Exact and phrase match keywords can participate when the query has direct commercial intent, broadly following familiar Search behaviour.
Contextual matching
When a person asks an exploratory question—such as why a swimming pool is green—the commercial need may emerge from the AI response. Google can then match an ad to both the query and the response context. AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max can participate in this wider contextual path.
This is why the update should not be treated as “another place for the same keyword list.” It changes the importance of complete business context, usable landing-page coverage and conversion feedback. Microsoft is moving toward a comparable automation-and-control model, which we analysed in the Microsoft Advertising Performance Max control-stack guide.

What advertisers can and cannot control
| Control area | What remains available | What is not available |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign participation | Campaign status, targeting, budgets and bidding | A separate AI Mode-only campaign |
| Eligibility | Search, Shopping and Performance Max settings | A placement-level AI Mode opt-out |
| Query control | Negative keywords, brand exclusions and account guardrails | A complete standalone report of every AI Mode conversation |
| Creative | Headlines, descriptions, images, pricing and destinations | Manual editing of Google’s independent AI explainers |
| Measurement | Campaign, search-term, conversion and cost reporting | A dedicated AI Mode performance segment |
The inability to isolate the placement creates an attribution constraint. It does not remove accountability. Teams should document what changed, when it changed and which business metric should move if the new matching path is useful. Our Google Ads channel-prioritisation audit provides a compatible method for separating platform access from budget decisions.
The four-input AI Mode readiness stack

1. Intent and targeting
Use AI-powered targeting only where the account has sufficient destination coverage and reliable exclusions. Broad eligibility is valuable when the campaign can distinguish relevant exploratory intent from research that has no plausible path to the business. Review negative keywords, brand rules, locations, service areas, inventory availability and sensitive-query exclusions before widening reach.
2. Conversion signals
Smart Bidding can only optimise toward the events supplied to it. A form submission, qualified lead, approved application and completed sale are not interchangeable. Define which event is primary, which is diagnostic and how quickly CRM outcomes can return to Google Ads. The lesson from our Merchant Center reporting audit applies here: measurement changes should be reconciled before budgets are changed.
3. Landing-page clarity
Exploratory questions create a wider promise. The landing page still has to fulfil it. Pages should state who the offer is for, what problem it solves, where it is available, what it costs or requires, and what the next step involves. Google says publicly available website information can contribute to AI explainers around sponsored placements, so stale claims and vague product language become campaign risks as well as conversion risks.
4. Product and commerce data
Shopping participation depends on a complete, fresh Merchant Center source. Titles, descriptions, high-resolution images, pricing, availability, ratings, shipping and return policies should agree with the landing page. The operational discipline described in our Merchant Center warranty-data guide is relevant beyond compliance: product data must remain consistent across source systems, feeds, pages and ads.
If those four layers currently sit with separate teams, PRM Digital can connect paid media, feed quality, landing-page UX and conversion measurement into one accountable optimisation plan.
A realistic lead-generation example
Consider an Indian B2B service company whose Search campaign records every completed form as a primary conversion. After wider contextual matching, monthly form submissions increase from 100 to 120, while sales-qualified leads move from 19 to 18. These figures are illustrative—not Google data.
The campaign dashboard may suggest growth. The CRM suggests lower lead quality. Several explanations remain possible: the new questions are earlier in the buying journey, the landing page attracts students or job seekers, duplicate leads are inflating the total, sales follow-up slowed, or the platform is optimising toward the easiest form completion rather than commercial value.
- Keep form submission as a diagnostic event.
- Return qualified-lead and opportunity stages from the CRM where permitted.
- Review search terms and landing-page paths for intent mismatch.
- Compare cost per qualified lead, not only cost per form.
- Change one control at a time and retain a rollback condition.

Measurement when placement reporting is aggregated

Google says AI Mode and AI Overview activity is included in aggregate campaign and search-term reporting. Advertisers therefore need a full value-path view rather than a placement-only dashboard.
- Google Ads: impressions, clicks, costs, search terms and platform conversions.
- Analytics: landing-page sessions, engagement, assisted journeys and form integrity.
- CRM: duplicate status, lead qualification, opportunity stage, revenue and loss reason.
- Commerce system: product margin, cancellations, returns and repeat purchase.
- Change log: targeting, asset, feed, bidding and landing-page changes by date.
This cross-channel contract mirrors the governance model in our Google Marketing Platform operating guide. Unified tools can accelerate decisions, but they do not create common definitions automatically.
Do not use an organic AI visibility metric as a substitute for ad performance. Google explicitly states that paid ads do not influence organic AI responses. For the organic side, review our analysis of what AI Overviews traffic research actually establishes.
A controlled 14-day implementation plan
Days 1–3: audit eligibility and constraints
- List active Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns serving India in English.
- Review negatives, brand exclusions, locations and product availability.
- Map which landing pages can answer exploratory questions without overpromising.
Days 4–6: validate the conversion contract
- Separate diagnostic and primary conversions.
- Reconcile a sample of Google Ads conversions against CRM or order records.
- Document attribution windows, deduplication and consent boundaries.
Days 7–10: repair assets, destinations and feeds
- Check message continuity from exploratory need to ad to landing page.
- Update product titles, images, prices, availability, shipping and return data.
- Remove claims that cannot be substantiated or maintained across surfaces.
Days 11–14: monitor and decide
- Review search-term themes and landing-page distribution.
- Track cost per qualified outcome alongside platform conversions.
- Choose one decision: keep, repair, narrow or test further.
- Scale only when the team can explain which signal the campaign is learning from.
FAQs
Do I need to create a new campaign for ads in AI Mode?
No. Google says eligible existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns participate automatically through the normal auction.
Can I target only AI Mode or exclude it separately?
No. Google treats AI Mode and AI Overviews as core Search experiences. Advertisers cannot target or opt out of them as separate placements, although normal campaign guardrails continue to apply.
Which keyword types can appear?
Exact and phrase match can participate when the query expresses direct commercial intent. AI Max, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max can also participate in contextual matching against the query and AI response.
Can advertisers edit Google’s AI explainer around an ad?
No. Google describes AI explainers as independent context generated by Gemini. Advertisers cannot manually write, approve or opt out of the explainer, which makes accurate website and product information especially important.
How should an Indian advertiser evaluate early performance?
Start with existing campaign, search-term, conversion, analytics and CRM evidence. Compare qualified outcomes before and after material changes, keep a change log and avoid attributing every movement to AI Mode because placement reporting remains aggregated.
The practical conclusion
Google’s India expansion creates access, not certainty. The strongest advertisers will not chase an invisible placement with speculative tactics. They will improve the campaign system that determines eligibility and value: clearer intent controls, stronger conversion definitions, better landing pages, accurate product data and reliable CRM reconciliation.
